This short novel begins with a 1764 setting in the forests of central Ohio (near present-day Coshocton, Ohio) at the junction of the Muskingum, the Tuscarawas, and the Waldhoning Rivers. The book presents a somewhat romanticized picture of the American Indian at that time. The central character is John Cameron Butler, known as True Son in the Delaware tribe with which he has lived since he was four years old. He is now fifteen and his life is being uprooted once again. The Indians have signed a treaty in which they have to return all white captives to their original families, even those who don't wish to go. All John knows is his life as an Indian and now he has to return to the family (in Paxton, Pennsylvania, on the Susquehanna River) he hasn't seen for eleven years. But, he doesn't fit in there and he finds himself caught between two cultures. Although very well written, it appears that Richter is suggesting that Indian/colonists interactions were doomed from the very beginning. One culture had to win and one had to lose. He presents the case where neither culture appeared willing to tolerate nor to understand the other. And, in more general terms, in my opinion Richter seems to hint that all such cultural conflicts are fated to fail. This is a rather sad commentary on man. I certainly hope it is not true and that there are good chances for Serb/Albanian, Irish/English, Indian/Pakistani, etc., interactions. This book is often used in reading assignments for students ranging from ages eleven through fourteen. I find it also a depressing thought that such a dark vision of man's capacity for tolerance and understanding is being presented to young, impressionable minds. I would have hoped that teachers in the 1990s would have found literary sources with a less negative outlook. It would appear that some of the negative reviews provided by earlier, and much younger, readers have some validity.

Four-year-old Johnny Butler was kidnapped by raiding Indians and raised as True Son--fully adopted to replace a dead Indian boy. For 11 years he has learned Indian ways from his new father, Cayuga. Considering himself a future warrior, he is stunned and rebelious when his father (and others) must surrender their white captives (including wives) to make a land deal with the White Man. Hurt, humiliated and terrified, True Son mentally spits on all Western civilization. He despises white ways--their attitude toward Nature, their cruelty to Indians, and their cramped, oppressive lifestyle. He privately plans to escape back into his true culture and real people at the first opportunity. But he reckons without knowledge of his biological family: an invalid mother who never recovered from his abduction; a kind but stern father who values his ledgers; an adoring little brother who had not yet been born. Worst of all is his hot-tempered uncle, who leads Peshtank "boys" on vicious, punitive raids against his people. Who is the real traitor to Peace between the races? How can this youth enjoy life without the loyal companionship of his best friend and "cousin." Half Arrow? Is it possible to take the Indian out of a boy whose blood and brain belong to the Native people? Both worlds claim him, yet in the final irony, both worlds may reject him. What does the future hold for a white youth who considers himself one with the enemies of the English in 1765? This is intense reading centered on a real moral dilemma, for which the youth is not responsible. Will he ever be free to choose his own path through life, to be accepted in either world? Will he have to betray white settlers, in order to prove his Indian heart? Presented with justice from both points of view, this short novel is an excellent example of Historical Fiction for readers of all ages.

Poor Conrad Richter. His literary fate is like that of Steinbeck's shorter works - read by 8th graders. When I mention Richter to my friends they think more of the Newberry than the Pulitzer Prize. Historical novelists are rarely thought of as having written "literature", yet that is what Richter wrote. Like Steinbeck, his style was simple and clear and strong. Like Steinbeck he understood the pain of being human. After reading one of his brief novels - they are often only about 200 pages - I wonder why other writers need so many more words. Richter did not think of himself as an historical novelist. He wrote instead to give a sense of how people experienced time past. Things happen in his novels, but the events are secondary to the perceptions, attitudes and (dare I say?) psychology. "The Light in the Forest" is a wonderful example of his work. Though it is about a teenage boy, it is not the "coming of age" or "rite or passage" story that it is often described as. It is about a person who lives in a world that has gone beyond his control - his life has been wrested from him by national and racial politics. His choices turn him into an American isolato. Very contemporary. The out-of-print and equally good companion novel "A Country of Strangers" pursues the same themes. Only in "Country" the protaganist is a white who has lived with the Indians and been returned to the whites. Like "Light" one of its virtues is to see through other's eyes. I wish I had the space to quote Stone Girl's dissection of Christianity. Maybe someday Richter will get his volume in the Libray of American and all his works will come back in print, including my favorite, "The Free Man".

Es ist ein sehr gut gemachtes Buch, dass einige gute Bastelideen enthält. Für Harry Potter Fans die gut und gerne basteln eine gute Sache. Ich persönlich habe mir von dem Buch mehr versprochen. Bin mir auch unschlüssig ob man viele der Ideen gemeinsam mit Kindern umsetzen kann. Zumindest bis zu einem gewissen Alter.Ich hätte 3,5 Sterne gegeben, aber für die tolle Aufmachung habe ich aufgerundet.Ich freu mich darüber das Buch zu haben und immer wieder darin zu stöbern, auch wenn ich einiges wohl nie ausprobieren werde.

Das Buch kam bei den Kindern gut an, einiges würde schon gebastelt, Lieferung war schnell, würde es wieder kaufen genau das richtige für Harry Potter fans

„Das inoffizielle Harry Potter Bastelbuch – Zauberstäbe, Denkarium und Co. zum Selbermachen“ von Christine Rechl erschien am 31. August 2018 im mvg Verlag und umfasst 160 Seiten.Die dargestellten Bastelideen orientieren sich an bekannten Harry Potter Themen, haben jedoch neue Aspekte in sich vereint und sorgen für frische Ideen innerhalb der Zaubererwelt J.K. Rowlings. Mein größter Kritikpunkt ist, dass sehr viele Materialien benötigt werden, die nicht unbedingt zum üblichen Haushalts- und Bastelinventar gehören. Ich habe mit einem Bastelbuch gerechnet, das sich besser und schneller im Alltag umsetzen lässt. Es ist nicht so, dass solche Ideen nicht aufgenommen wurden, für den Großteil musste ich jedoch noch einige Utensilien besorgen, die auch nicht unbedingt für einen enger geschnürten Geldbeutel geeignet sind. Für eine ganz tolle Idee, die Putzmittelflaschen beinhaltet, wäre ich beispielsweise auf folgenden Betrag gekommen:Was wurde benötigt?- Putzmittelflaschen (wohl in den meisten Haushalten vorhanden, Centbetrag)- Acrylfarbe matt 100 ml weiß + beige (oft günstig in Bastelläden für je 3 € zu bekommen = 6 €)- Metallic-Lack Gold 45 ml (ca. 5 €)- Foto-Transfer-Potch 150 ml (ca. 7 €)- Acryl-Glanzlack 50 ml (ca. 6 €)- Wundbenzin (ca. 4 € in kleinem Gefäß)Ergibt für eine einzige Idee rund 30 €. Machbar, aber dennoch verhältnismäßig teuer. Ja, es ist kein Upcycling-Buch, dennoch empfinde ich Beträge wie diesen als zu hoch. Ich habe mich deswegen im Bastelprozess dazu entschlossen, viele der Ideen lediglich als Vorgabe zu verstehen, die ich nur im weiteren Sinne umsetze. Gut ist, dass man hier zum selbstständigen Nachdenken motiviert wird, um günstigere Produkte zu finden, die einen ähnlichen Effekt erzeugen könnten und im besten Fall schon im Haushalt vorhanden sind.Glücklicherweise bietet das Buch aber noch günstigere Alternativen, allerdings muss definitiv aussortiert werden, wenn das zur Verfügung stehende Budget eher klein ist. Ein Beispiel, dass ich sehr gerne erwähnen möchte, ist die Einladung in Schokofrosch-Verpackungsform, denn hier ist die Vorlage im Anhang zu finden und es werden lediglich ein Kopierer, grünes Papier, eine Schere und Kleber benötigt. Das ist leicht und gut umsetzbar, sodass der Bastelspaß ohne längere Vorbereitung und Einkaufszeit beginnen kann. Dies trifft auch auf das Monsterbuch der Monster zu.Alternativ lassen sich bestimmt günstigere Abwandlungen finden, da ich mich jedoch an die Buchvorgaben halten wollte, fielen einige Ideen leider schon zu Beginn raus. Die Ideen sind ausnahmslos phantasievoll und echte Hingucker, man merkt, dass sich hier viel Mühe gegeben wurde. Auch eingefleischte Fans werden noch Dinge finden, die sie so nicht kannten und die Bastellust wird angeregt. Für jede Schwierigkeitsstufe und bevorzugte Bastelart lässt sich eine Idee finden. Persönlich haben mir jedoch vor allem die Ideen gefallen, die sich leicht und mit allen Altersgruppen umsetzen lassen, so etwa das Basteln einer Schokofrosch-Verpackung im alternativen Design oder das Bemalen von Tellern und Gläsern (Achtung: Auch hier müssen Bastelfreunde sich möglicherweise einige Materialien besorgen). Ein großes Lob möchte ich auch für die gut verständlichen Anleitungen aussprechen, die mit vielen Bildern zu den einzelnen Teilschritten geschmückt wurden. Im Anhang finden sich tolle Vorlagen und auch Spielideen für eine stilechte Harry Potter Party sind vorhanden.FazitIch hatte viel Spaß während des Bastelprozesses und auch das Buch ist einfach ein Hingucker. Unterschiedliche Schwierigkeitsgrade, die auch angegeben wurden, sprechen mehrere Alters- und Bastelgruppen an. Ich würde das Bastelbuch nicht – wie ich erwartet hatte – Kindern und Erwachsenen zu gleichen Teilen empfehlen. Eher sehe ich es für Jugendliche und Erwachsene geeignet. Das Design ist ansprechend, die vielen Bilder sind eine große Hilfe. Mein großer Kritikpunkt sind allerdings die doch recht hohen Kosten für einige Ideen. Ich habe verhältnismäßig viele Utensilien daheim gehabt, mich aber dennoch gegen einige sicherlich tolle Bastelmomente entschieden, weil sie mir schlichtweg zu kostenintensiv gewesen wären.Ein Tipp: Bastelmaterialien können besser in ansässigen Läden besorgt werden, da im Netz doch ordentlich Porto draufgelegt werden muss!

Das Buch haben wir unserer Enkelin zu Weihnachten geschenkt. Sie wird es mit Freude durcharbeiten.

Alles bestens, war das Weihnachtsgeschenk für meine Nichte, die gerne bastelt und Gary Potter Fan ist.

20 Jahre Harry Potter - ein wirklich großes Jubiläum. Ich weiß nicht, welche Buchreihe, so viele Menschen mitnehmen konnte, sogar mein Bruder, ein erwiesener Nicht-Leser, hat den ein oder anderen Band gelesen.Nachdem ich euch nun schon "Das inoffizielle Harry Potter Backbuch" vorgestellt habe, will ich auch "Das inoffizielle Harry Potter Bastelbuch" nicht unter den Tisch fallen lassen.Zwei ganz verschiedene Bereiche mit denen ihr euch aber eine Menge Harry Potter oder Hogwarts nach Hause holen könnt.Auch hier gibt es verschiedene Kapitel in denen ihr nach geeigneten Bastelprojekten suchen könnt: Zauberstäbe, Zaubermittel, Magie der Worte, Verteidigung gegen die dunklen Kräfte des Haushalts, Das zauberhafte Zauberer-Zuhause und Verzaubere deine Gäste.Ihr sehr schon, es gibt ganz unterschiedliche Bereiche und für diejenigen unter uns, die etwas Hilfe brauchen (wie ich) gibt es am Ende auch noch die passenden Vorlagen.Ich persönlich finde zum Beispiel die Zauberstabbastelei eine tolle Sache für eine Themen-Geburstagsparty, jedes Kind hat etwas, was es mit nach Hause nehmen kann und dabei würden bestimmt ein paar schöne Stäbe herauskommen.Aber auch die anderen Ideen sind wirklich toll und oft kann man auch alte Flaschen, Gläser etc. recyclen. Es gibt viele, tolle Dekoideen, die auch Nicht-Zauberer-Haushalte aufwerten.Das Buch ist neben den vielen tollen Ideen auch einfach ein Hingucker, es ist sehr liebevoll und detailliert gestaltet und auch die Bilder und Ideen zeugen von Herzblut - ein wirklich tolles Harry Potter Bastelbuch!
